How Many Kinds of Marriage Can Zi Wei Dou Shu Actually Tell Apart? I Counted All 262,980 Birth Moments

Measuring whether Zi Wei Dou Shu is accurate is a philosophical trap, but counting how many kinds of people its symbol system can distinguish is a straightforward math problem. Across all 262,980 birth moments from 1965 to 2024, if you look only at which major stars sit in the Spouse Palace, the system differentiates exactly 39 configurations. If you move to the strict layer including minor stars, malefic stars, miscellaneous stars, and natal four transformations, that number leaps to 137,636 configurations. That represents a difference in resolution of 3,529 times between the broad view and a complete palace profile.

Why start a system census with the Spouse Palace? In Zi Wei Dou Shu, the position of the Spouse Palace is not determined by an independent astronomical reading or a separate observational input. It is derived mechanically from the placement of the Life Palace. The classical manual 《紫微斗数捷览》 (Quick Overview of Zi Wei Dou Shu) explains this structural rule with the line 「假如命立子宫,则亥为兄弟宫,戌为夫妻宫」. Because the Spouse Palace sits two positions counterclockwise from the Life Palace, its spatial slot is locked by geometry. That fixed mechanical nature makes it an ideal testing ground for counting how many distinct symbolic states the system actually generates.

To measure this resolution, I ran an enumeration script across a full sixty-year calendar window, from 1965-01-01 through 2024-12-31. Sampling the midpoint of each of the 12 double-hours every day yields exactly 262,980 birth moments. The calculation engine processed the dataset using traditional San He school rules under a male setting with true solar time disabled, recording zero engine failures across the entire run. I wrote the logic into packages/engine/tests/census/spouse-palace-resolution.test.ts, which takes about 54 seconds per run and outputs its results to xiaoS/data/20260905-census-spouse-resolution.json so anyone can inspect the raw distribution. To analyze the output, I defined three granularity layers to observe how specificity builds up as parameters are added.

Layer one considers only major stars occupying the Spouse Palace. In our sample of 262,980 moments, the number of major stars sitting in the Spouse Palace takes only three values. The palace holds 0 major stars in 43,268 moments, 1 major star in 132,627 moments, and 2 major stars in 87,085 moments. Combining these possibilities produces 39 major-star configurations, consisting of 14 single major stars, 24 fixed two-star pairings, and 1 empty palace setup. At this layer, an average of 6,743 birth moments share identical major-star signatures. Layer two adds the earthly branch on which the Spouse Palace sits, expanding the total to 132 configurations and lowering the average to 1,992 moments per bucket. Layer three, the strict layer, introduces minor stars, malefic stars, miscellaneous stars, and the natal four transformations landing in that palace. Here the count reaches 137,636 unique configurations, averaging 1.91 birth moments per bucket. Going from layer one to layer three increases symbolic resolution by a factor of 3,529.

The single largest category among the 39 major-star configurations is the empty palace, occurring in 43,268 out of 262,980 moments, or 16.453% of the total. Roughly one out of every six birth charts contains no major star in the Spouse Palace. Traditional methodology handles an empty palace by borrowing the star combination from the opposite palace, which is the Career Palace. In a separate census examining the placement of secondary stars Hong Luan and Tian Xi in the Spouse Palace, the occurrence rate turned out to be exactly one sixth. While 16.453% and one sixth look nearly identical, their closeness is purely a mathematical coincidence stemming from two completely unrelated star placement algorithms.

These figures clarify the scope of traditional interpretations. Astrological judgments in classical texts attach directly to specific star combinations, meaning any analysis built exclusively on major stars draws from a pool of at most 39 outcomes. For instance, the classical work 《紫微斗数全书》 (Complete Compendium of Zi Wei Dou Shu) contains broad assertions such as 「破军属水,北斗第七星也,司夫妻、子息、奴仆之神」. This statement evaluates Po Jun as a general principle without specifying its earthly branch or minor star modifiers, making it a pure layer-one statement. When a practitioner offers a reading using only major stars, they sort the client into one of 39 buckets. Furthermore, those 39 buckets are far from evenly distributed. The empty palace leads at 16.453%, followed by single major stars like Tian Liang at 4.320%, Tian Tong at 4.319%, Tai Yang at 4.263%, and Ju Men at 4.262%. Every two-star pairing falls into a narrow range between 1.27% and 1.47%. A judgment relying solely on major stars applies the same verdict to thousands of individuals whose actual lives diverge sharply.

At the same time, these numbers must not be overstated. Showing that layer one contains only 39 categories does not prove that Zi Wei Dou Shu is flawed or incapable of meaningful distinction. High symbolic resolution is not identical to empirical accuracy. A complex model producing 137,636 unique profiles can still be completely wrong if its rules fail to reflect human reality, whereas a coarse model with 39 broad archetypes might capture recurring personality patterns effectively.

Another detail rests in the configuration of the test run, which was executed using the male setting in the engine. In Zi Wei Dou Shu, the natal chart for any given birth moment remains identical regardless of gender. Selecting the male setting alters the direction of the major-limit decade sequence during progression, but it has no impact on which stars land in the Spouse Palace at birth. Minor stars, malefic stars, and four transformations do not shift based on gender settings.

Furthermore, the three-layer breakdown is my own analytical choice rather than a sacred doctrine written into ancient texts. I fixed layer one as major stars only, layer two as major stars plus the earthly branch, and layer three as the complete set including minor stars, malefic stars, miscellaneous stars, and natal four transformations. I selected where to draw those two boundary lines. If someone drew the second boundary elsewhere, such as treating the earthly branch as part of the third layer or placing the natal four transformations into the second layer, their middle configuration count would differ from 132. The figure of 132 is specific to the definition of layer two used here, where minor stars and transformations are excluded by definition.

Does having only 39 configurations mean Zi Wei Dou Shu is crude? No, because no thorough reading stops at the major-star layer. Major stars form the basic structural outline, but adding branch positions, minor stars, and natal four transformations expands those 39 broad categories into 137,636 precise configurations. The 39 buckets simply represent the foundational skeleton of the system.

Why can the Spouse Palace hold at most two major stars? The star placement algorithm distributes fourteen major stars across twelve palaces according to spatial rules tied to the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups. Because of how these two series rotate relative to one another, no single palace on the chart can ever receive more than two major stars. The census data reflects this mathematical boundary, showing zero, one, or two major stars across all 262,980 tested moments.

Is an empty Spouse Palace a bad sign? An empty Spouse Palace is not inherently a bad sign in system mechanics. The census only shows that no major star resides there, and the traditional method is to evaluate that palace by borrowing the star combination from the opposite Career Palace.

Can I run this myself? Yes, the test script is part of the repository and can be run locally. You can execute packages/engine/tests/census/spouse-palace-resolution.test.ts on your machine to recompute the entire dataset of 262,980 birth moments. The calculation takes about 54 seconds and writes its output to xiaoS/data/20260905-census-spouse-resolution.json for review.

When you review a Zi Wei Dou Shu reading for your Spouse Palace, pay attention to which elements the speaker is actually using. Count how many variables their judgment depends on during the explanation. If the reading relies entirely on major stars, it is delivering a general statement shared by thousands of people born around the same time. If it incorporates the full strict layer, it is referencing one of the strict configurations, which average 1.91 birth moments across the sixty-year census.
